17 Movie Scenes That Are Incredibly Disturbing, Despite Having Zero Gore

1 week ago 26

Horror is meant to scare you, but some movies can leave you disturbed no matter the genre. Some movie scenes are incredibly disturbing without ever showing gore. These scenes are a special kind of terror, the kind that stays with you long after the initial shock.

Here are 17 disturbing film moments that have ZERO gore. Oh, also: there are spoilers ahead!

Content warning: This post discusses disturbing topics and contains disturbing imagery, including violence, murder, and the loss of a child.

1. "The First Attack" from Jaws (1975)

Although the Jaws opening only implies violence, it is still a brutal and disturbing scene. After Chrissie goes "swimmingggg," she becomes the first victim of the 25-foot great white. The helpless final cries before being submerged underwater are haunting. This scene messed up so many viewers that there are still people out there who refuse to go into ocean water.

2. "The Birthday Party Footage" from Signs (2002)

In an alien movie, you would doubt that seeing an alien would disturb you. Wrong! The birthday party footage in Signs freaked out an entire generation. The found footage is grainy enough to keep you on edge, and then this tall alien walks by, mere yards away from children at a birthday party. It's a masterful reveal for a movie that doesn't show what the aliens look like until deep into the runtime. Trauma.

Perhaps the last disturbing horror moment of the 20th century, The Blair Witch Project delivered its unforgettable conclusion. In looking for the Blair Witch, a documentary team gets lost in the woods. Our main character, Heather, finds one of her friends inside an old building, facing a corner. The Blair Witch lore says she would make them face a corner before murdering them. The low-quality final shot was nightmare fuel for viewers.

4. "The Hobbling" from Misery (1990)

A masterful horror suspense written by Stephen King and adapted by Rob Reiner. The movie does not rely on violence at all, and I'd argue it is a psychological thriller...until the sledgehammer comes out. In an attempt to keep her favorite author, Paul Sheldon, bedridden, Annie Wilkes takes her anger out on Paul's ankles. Is it a violent moment? Yes. But there is no gore, and the real disturbing part comes through the build-up and Kathy Bates' God-tier performance.

5. "The Scream" from Invasion of the Body Snatchers

In a world where you cannot identify them from you, the body snatchers are horror 101. You would think a '70s remake wouldn't live up to the concept's disturbing heights. It did! Our last woman standing sees her friend and believes she is safe. Nope! He's one of them. The screeching sound. The point. Her screams. Everything about this scene creates a hopelessness unlike any other. Truly, a brilliant ending.

6. "Stuck" from The Descent (2002)

If you have claustrophobia, move on to the next entry. Still here? With a movie about cave-dwelling monsters, the most disturbing aspect is the setting itself. The tight spaces of the caves are horrifying in this film, and one scene where our hero gets stuck really amps up the claustrophobia. You will be taking small breaths during it.

7. "Family Dinner" from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

While there is some violence throughout the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there are plenty of gore-free scenes that are incredibly disturbing. Along with the opening car ride, the family dinner scene just makes you squirm in your seat. A great example of building a setting you DO NOT want to find yourself trapped in.

8. "That Ghost" from Pulse (2001)

Also called Kairo, Pulse has plenty of ghostly moments, but one stands out. The scene with the ghost walking down the hallway will send chills down your spine. Her movements are so unsettling, and it feels like the closest we've come to accurately depicting a ghost.

9. "The Crib" from Trainspotting (1996)

A lot of movies wouldn't show a dead baby in a crib, but Trainspotting went there. Too high on heroin, the neglectful characters discover that the baby in the crib is dead. The reveal pulls no punches, much like the movie, and you can feel your stomach drop.

10. "Large Marge" from Pee-wee Herman's Big Adventure (1985)

"Be sure to tell 'em: Large Marge sent ya!" Is it even a disturbing movie moments list without Large Marge? Tim Burton decided to drip a little horror into a Pee-wee movie by adding a jump scare involving a spooky claymation face. It is probably the most skipped scene in any children's movie ever.

11. "The Chocolate River Boat Ride" from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

If we're sticking with childhood trauma, Willy Wonka's boat ride of terror ranks among the most disturbing moments in cinema. From his creepy monologue to the terrifyingly psychedelic visuals (including a chicken's head getting chopped off), it's truly nightmare fuel. "Tell that little guy to turn this thing around, Wonka!"

12. "By The Lake" from Zodiac (2007)

The kidnapping and murder of the couple by the lake is the most memorable scene in the Zodiac movie. The scene does its job by disturbing audiences with the suddenness and terror of a Zodiac Killer murder. The violence is there, but no blood is ever shown...but man, this is one of those movie kills that sticks with you. No music. No bells and whistles. Just pure evil.

13. "The Red Dress" from Schindler's List (1993)

One of the most masterful decisions in filmmaking is also the most disturbingly executed. Director Steven Spielberg splashed red into a black-and-white film to showcase a girl's red coat so viewers would be horrified to recognize her dead body later being carted away.

14. "The Wrong Face" from The Others (2001)

I was way too young when I saw this movie, and I think the scene where the daughter's face is revealed under her veil to be that of an older woman deeply disturbed moviegoers. The humming. The candlelight. Her creepy, child-like smile when she sees her mom. It's all a mood...a very spooky mood.

15. "Clowning Around" from Hell House LLC franchise

Literally any scene with the black-and-white clown from the Hell House LLC series. Clowns don't get me, but this clown's "mannequin horror" elements are really disturbing, beyond simple chills. The blood on his face is fake, and although he never does anything violent, his mere presence is worthy of being on this list.

16. "Happy Birthday" from I Saw The TV Glow (2024)

I don't know if any movie scene this decade can top the disturbing birthday scene in I Saw the TV Glow. The main character, Owen, has an emotional breakdown so raw it will freak audiences out and make them question whether they, too, have let life pass them by without being true to themselves. This movie sticks with you, man, but there's still time (always).

17. And lastly, "The Face Reveal" from Hush (2016)

Mike Flanagan is well known to horror fans now, and Hush is a horror gem. An isolated woman without the ability to hear or speak is stalked by a killer outside her house. VERY early on in the movie, in a desperate plea, she bargains with the killer by saying she won't tell anyone since she hasn't seen his face. The killer, brazenly, removes his mask and stares at her bare-faced. It's sooo disturbing, and it strips all hope from the audience, realizing there is zero bargaining with this killer who is hell-bent on killing our lead.
