The Philadelphia 76ers went all out this offseason, just like the Miami Heat did while building their powerful roster. The 76ers came out of nowhere, though, as no one expected them to make a blockbuster trade for former Boston Celtic Jaylen Brown.
Then, it was that move that got LeBron James to look at them in free agency. As we all know, he would go on to sign with them.
“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote. "James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania
The two are going to make such a big impact on not only the team, but the organization as a whole. After all, them coming to Philadelphia got their longtime PA announcer Matt Cord to come out of retirement.
“76ers announcer Matt Cord is UNRETIRING and returning for one final season. Cord retired last season after 28 years, but says the Sixers’ offseason moves convinced him to come back,” Bleacher Report posted.
This is big news for the 76ers, as they got their guy back on this front as well. Cord has been there for 28 years, and if he stays until the end of James’ contract, it could be 30. He confirmed it was James and Brown who made him come back.
“I thought that when I retired at the end of last season, that was it. I was going to take lots of trips, still do my radio job, and then we get LeBron James, and we get Jaylen Brown, and then certain people are reaching out to me," Cord said.
James and Brown are great athletes, but they also apparently have a great impact on getting veterans out of retirement. 76ers fans will get to come back to the games to hear their favorite PA announcer for at least one last season.
Philadelphia is going to make this season very special for their fans, and they are already making that very clear. The two NBA champions getting Cord out of retirement wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card.
