After Travis Kelce’s Response To Shane Gillis’s Misogynistic “SNL” Monologue, People Are Remembering An Infamous Past Taylor Swift Tweet

2 weeks ago 18

As you might’ve seen, Shane made a string of misogynistic “jokes” during his opening segment, including calling women “whores” for wearing short shorts at the gym. “I haven't been to the gym in so long. I didn't know women just dressed like whores now,” he said. “Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe… Have you seen it? I've seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts? Those neon…they're, like, artificial bait colored. And the wrinkles, the wrinkles go, like, around the cheeks and all combined at the butthole… And don't look. You're not allowed to look. For real, don't look 'cause they are filming. I'm in the background of, like, 10 TikToks right now.”

Shane’s remarks didn’t exactly land well, especially amid the ongoing attention surrounding the high-profile Cornell University lawsuit. In fact, several celebrities — including Dan Levy and SNL alum Ego Nwodim — have publicly called out the controversial monologue. “Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists, there's a difference there… By the way, I've seen more men's nipples at the gym than I've ever seen women showing their bodies off,” the Schitt’s Creek star said.

But amid the widespread backlash against Shane’s remarks, some internet users noticed that other celebrities — like Cara Delevingne and Travis Kelce — had pointedly liked the video of the monologue, posted onto SNL’s Instagram page.

Reacting to Travis’s “like,” one person wrote online, “He's smart enough to know what misogyny is and he's privileged enough to not care unless it affects him. Liking the monologue even goes beyond that since it's him approving of it.”

“my baby likes what he likes and he likes The Patriarchy!!” someone tweeted, quoting lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song “Cleveland,” which is about Travis. “‘my baby likes what he likes’ and it’s maga and misogynistic content,” another user wrote.

The onscreen moment saw a character being teased for “going through men faster than Taylor Swift.” In response, the singer tweeted, “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you 💔 Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

Recalling this moment now, one person tweeted, “remember when Taylor and the swifties thought Ginny and Georgia was the peak of misogyny and deeply degrading and deeply sexist.”

“we’re waiting for your tweet condemning travis for engaging in misogyny @taylorswift13,” someone wrote, while another user suggested, “it’s only misogyny when it affects her.”

“are we pretending she had any issue with the Ginny and Georgia joke other than it being about her specifically?” one more popular X post read.

Amid more discourse around Taylor’s history of calling out misogyny when it directly impacts her, some people recalled her disappointing silence amid her now-ex-boyfriend Matty Healy’s disturbing remarks about women.

During the time that Taylor and Matty were dating, The 1975 frontman casually admitted to masturbating to Black women being “brutalized” on extreme porn site Ghetto Gaggers, amid several other controversies.

As fans called for her to use her platform to condemn Shane’s SNL monologue, especially given that Travis “liked” the video, one person tweeted, “she didn't even comment on matty ghetto gagger healy lmao.”

And while several people argued that it was unfair to turn the spotlight onto Taylor following Travis’s action, one person summarized: “It’s not really about expecting a call out post for her own husband it’s about the blatant privilege and hypocrisy she’s showing by not speaking misogyny when it’s someone she loves or more importantly when she’s not the victim of it.”
