The Philadelphia Phillies have had a bit of a roller coaster of a 2026 season. It's been hard to get a real gauge for what this team really is. Are they a real contender, or are they an inconsistent team that cannot be trusted when it matters most?
Both sides have strong arguments, but in the eyes of one American League executive, there are five strong reasons why the Phillies are legitimate title contenders this season.
Jesse Rogers of ESPN shared the comment from an AL executive on the Phillies, who highlighted five players as reasons why the Phillies can contend for a title this season.
5 players who have an AL exec believing in the Phillies
"I know how good the Dodgers and Brewers are, but I'm not betting against [Cristopher] Sanchez, [Zack] Wheeler and [Jesus] Luzardo -- not to mention Bryce [Harper] and [Kyle] Schwarber," this anonymous AL executive told Rogers.
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber are the kind of sluggers who can change a game with one swing. They're elite hitters and are only part of why this AL exec believes in the Phillies' ability to win it all this season.
Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Zack Wheeler are three of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues right now, and will be a massive advantage come the postseason.
Add on Aaron Nola's recent resurgence, Andrew Painter figuring things out, and Jhoan Duran being a dominant closer, and the Phillies have some incredible pitching talent that can carry them in the postseason.

This American League executive believes in the Phillies, and that's despite the team likely ending up as the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the NL Wild Card. The reason why is interesting.
"They're one team that doesn't HAVE to have the bye because of those pitchers," this AL exec said. "Remember, they've been as good as anyone for a long time now."
With an elite rotation to carry them in a three-game Wild Card series, earning a Wild Card spot wouldn't be a bad thing for the Phillies.
Sure, it puts them at risk of getting eliminated from the MLB postseason in the first three games of the playoffs, but they're well set up to win such a series with their elite pitching staff.
This belief from an AL executive should give Phillies fans confidence in the team. While it's fair to have reservations about the 2026 Phillies, there's no denying that the potential is a World Series-caliber roster. The only question is whether they can play up to that potential.
