Arizona State hockey is currently facing a wave of controversy after player Matthew Mayich Mayich collapsed during a team workout on August 20. Mayich suffered an exertional heat stroke that hospitalized him and put him in critical condition, with the Mayich family attorney Rob Carey saying he is unlikely to recover.
As a result, Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers is under the microscope for his role that led to Mayich's hospitalization. Powers has been the Arizona State head coach since 2010, and reportedly brought in a former Green Beret to help execute a military-style workout on the first day of training camp.

Greg Powers refuses questions about player on life support
Arizona State hockey head coach Greg Powers spoke publicly in a press conference on Wednesday, September 23 for the first time since Sun Devils hockey player Matthew Mayich was put on life support following a team workout. Specifically, Powers had to answer whether he deserved to remain on his job after he was in charge when this happened.
"There's obviously some things that have been said about me and I respect anything anybody has to say. But I believe I am the right guy, and 20 years of a body of work and building a program, almost 20 years now, I still believe that," Powers said.
The Athletic's Katie Strang was one of the reporters who got to speak with Powers on Wednesday, trying to get Powers to go deeper into his role for what happened. Powers, however, did not answer Strang's many questions.
"Can you explain why you think it's more important for you right now to answer questions about hockey rather than address the circumstances that left one of your players on life support?" Strang asked.
"Again, just, not able to answer questions regarding it in any way," Powers then answered.
Arizona State then tried to deny Strang's follow up question, but she was able to ask Powers one more thing regarding his accountability towards his team.
"How have you modeled accountability for your team over the past month?," Strang asked next.
"In a lot of ways," Powers answered, before refusing to elaborate.
