Blue Jays and Mariners make brutal MLB history together not seen since 1987

The Toronto Blue Jays made the World Series last year, coming just one win shy of a World Series title in a seven-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was their second consecutive seven-game series, as the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners went to Game 7 as well. Both ALCS teams from 2025 were close to titles, and they have plenty of hope entering the 2026 season.

However, they've each struggled mightily this year. And according to OptaSTATS, these teams have made MLB history not seen since 1987. They're the first teams in nearly 40 years to make the ALCS one year and have a losing record the next.

Blue Jays, Mariners make MLB history not seen since 1987

"For the first time since 1987, both ALCS participants from the previous year will finish with a losing record," OptaSTATS shared.

After making the ALCS a year ago, both the Mariners and Blue Jays have not only failed to make the playoffs, but they've also failed to finish with a winning record.

Despite both teams having a few more games to go, the 77-82 Blue Jays cannot finish better than 80-82, while the 74-84 Mariners cannot finish better than 78-84.

It was an incredibly disappointing season for both teams, though there is at least a bit more optimism for the future of the Blue Jays as opposed to the Mariners.

Both teams have a lot of young talent worth being excited about, but considering how the Mariners' season has gone, it's hard to have much confidence in them going forward.

Ironically, both teams' top players, Cal Raleigh and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., had incredibly disappointing seasons in 2026 after strong 2025 seasons.

While there will be hope for both teams in the future, this major step backwards is something MLB has not seen since 1987.

It's been a brutal year for the Blue Jays and Mariners, as the two ALCS teams from a year ago have both collapsed at the same time, making some brutal history in the process.
