The Pittsburgh Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. have been going at it throughout the summer over a new contract, but nothing came to fruition. That led to a bad relationship between the two sides, which opened up the avenue for a trade.
Porter is a very good corner who is physical with anyone. On Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys were in trade discussions for him.
“A handful of teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, have begun making inquiries about the availability of Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., league sources told ESPN. The Steelers would be willing to listen to trade offers for Porter, according to sources, but they also would want a strong compensation package if they were to deal the fourth-year star,” Schefter wrote.
Late Wednesday night, The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Steelers are trading Porter to the Cowboys.
“The Steelers and Cowboys are finalizing a deal late Wednesday night that will send cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to Dallas. The Cowboys first called about Porter—who didn’t participate in training camp amid contract talks and hadn’t played this season, citing a back injury—a couple of weeks ago. But trade talks really accelerated in recent days, finally coming to a head less than 24 hours before Pittsburgh was scheduled to kick off Thursday night’s game against the Browns in Cleveland,” Pelissero wrote.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz was quick to report the details of the trade. Porter is getting sent to Dallas for draft compensation.
“Cowboys are sending a 2nd round pick and a conditional 6th to the Steelers in the trade to get Joey Porter Jr. Deal is being finalized tonight,” Schultz wrote.
This is a huge get for the Cowboys, as it gives them a legit 1-2 punch with DaRon Bland on the opposite side of Porter. It is unclear what the Lions were willing to give, but Dallas had the better offer.
Porter finally gets to end his nightmare saga with the Steelers and start a new chapter with the Cowboys. Dallas is a legitimate playoff contender, and by completing the trade, they just made it harder for a lot of offenses.
