Cubs make MLB postseason history with all-time terrible slugging percentage

1 month ago 14

The Chicago Cubs lost Game 1 and Game 2 of the NL Wild Card round to the San Diego Padres, dropping out of the postseason hunt before they could even get anything going.

While the pitching was largely to blame for their quick exit from the playoffs, the real issue for the Cubs this year was their all-time horrible offense.

As OptaSTATS shared, the 2026 Cubs broke the MLB postseason record for the worst slugging percentage in a multi-game postseason series with a truly horrendous mark.

Cubs make all-time terrible MLB postseason history

"Lowest slugging percentage in a multi-game postseason series, MLB history: .145 - 2026 Cubs (NLWC), .153 - 2020 Twins (ALWC), .154 - 2022 Rays (ALWC), .174 - 1998 Rangers (ALDS), .179 - 2019 Cardinals (NLCS)," OptaSTATS shared.

The Cubs, with a horrendous .145 slugging percentage in the two-game Wild Card against the Padres, just broke the record for the worst slugging percentage in a postseason series in MLB history.

They're the first team ever to have a sub .150 slugging percentage in a series before, and did so with an all-time horrible mark of .145 in two games.

What makes this such an incomprehensible record for the Cubs is that they actually led Major League Baseball in slugging percentage during the regular season, posting a .428 this season for the best mark in MLB.

Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media_) shared the overall production from this Cubs team in 2026's postseason, and the numbers are truly terrible.

The Cubs went 8-for-62, good for a .129 batting average, with one double, no triples, and no home runs. They scored just one run and posted a 7 OPS+ with a .374 OPS.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman, Michael Busch, Ian Happ, Matt Shaw, Michael Conforto, and Dansby Swanson all went hitless in this series.

Nico Hoerner was the lone player to hit a double, and it came when the Cubs were down to their last two outs against Mason Miller in the ninth inning, down 4-1.

This offensive showing from the Cubs made some brutal MLB history. There's a real case that this offensive performance from the Cubs in the NL Wild Card against the Padres is one of the worst of all time, considering the drop-off from their 2026 regular season.
