“Glee” Star Kevin McHale Just Subtly Offered A Rare Glimpse Into His Relationship With Naya Rivera’s Son, Josey, Six Years After Her Tragic Death

Naya Rivera’s July 2020 death is arguably one of the most tragic celebrity passings in recent years, with the Glee star losing her life in a boating incident at age 33, witnessed by her then-4-year-old son, Josey.

Naya had taken Josey on the boat trip in Lake Piru, California, but drowned when she was unable to get back onto the boat when it started to drift. The incident report on her death concluded that Naya drowned after she exhausted herself getting Josey to safety, and the little boy was found alone on the boat some time later.

Last year, Josey’s father, Ryan Dorsey, shared heartbreaking new details about the tragedy in an interview with People ahead of the fifth anniversary of Naya’s passing. For reference, Ryan and Naya were married between 2014 and 2018, and coparented Josey at the time of her death.

The most devastating revelation was undeniably how much Josey remembers, with the preschooler not only having to bear witness to his mom’s tragic death, but also live with lasting guilt of not being able to save her. Ryan told the publication that once on board the boat, Josey began looking for something to help Naya and found a rope, but was “too scared” to move it because there was a “big spider” on it.

“Something he’s said over and over is that he was trying to find a life raft, and there was a rope, but there was a big spider on the rope, and he was too scared to throw it,” Ryan explained. “I keep reassuring him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t going to be long enough.’ That obviously still sticks out in his head because he feels like he could have saved her. I think she just got caught up in a brush — that or a weird undercurrent from the dam. It was just a freak occurrence."

Search-and-rescue divers looked for Naya for five days before her body was discovered, and after her funeral, Ryan took Josey back to his home state of West Virginia to escape the paparazzi. After a while, they returned to LA, and Naya’s sister, Nickayla, moved in with them for a year to help care for her nephew.

And this past weekend, Naya’s fans were left delighted when they spotted that now-11-year-old Josey had been spending time with one of Naya’s best friends and former Glee costars, Kevin McHale.

Shortly after news of Naya’s death broke, Kevin shared a moving tribute on his social media account, which read, in part: “I legitimately can not imagine this world without you.” He ultimately ended up scrapping the Glee rewatch podcast he hosted with Jenna Ushkowitz as a direct response to her passing, and pays moving tribute to her on the anniversary of her death each year.

Just last year, during an appearance on The Zach Sang Show, Kevin called out how difficult it is when fans bring up Naya when they meet him. Acknowledging that the fans likely have good intentions, Kevin reflected on how upsetting he finds the conversations, and how much he still misses his friend.

With all of this in mind, it’s heartwarming to know that he still has a relationship with Naya’s son, with a picture of himself, Josey, and Ryan included in a recent Instagram dump that he shared in honor of his move to New York City.

“One full year since moving to NYC and I’m overwhelmingly grateful I get to be here with @austineyes. A year of seeing longtime friends, finding my people, and getting to work with so many wonderful, ridiculously talented and supportive people. My body and mind have been challenged and fulfilled in ways I didn’t know I were possible. I’m so damn lucky. Thank you to everyone who’s made this city feel like home for both of us. I’m not leaving ;)” he captioned the post.

According to E! News, the photo with Ryan and Josey is thought to have been taken when the pair visited New York to see Kevin make his Broadway debut in The Rocky Horror Picture Show in late August, and it triggered an incredibly emotional response online. One viral tweet reposted the pic and simply added: “Kevin hanging out with Josey… my chest omg 🥹🥹🥹”

“i hope kevin tells josey stories about naya. not just the big things, but the little things too. what she was like as a friend, the way she made people laugh, all the things that made her HER,” somebody else added. One more wrote: “aww 😭 they're really watching out for him.” And another echoed: “The cast still stepping up for her son🥹💔😭”
