Hornets officially waive ex-Mavericks undrafted gritty floor general after second Buddy Hield trade

The Charlotte Hornets have had somewhat of a busy offseason, to say the least. One of the moves they made was trading away LaMelo Ball, who has practically grown up in the organization.

Still, the team has had reason to move on from some of its cap problems, and that is exactly what they have done this week. It all started by trading for veteran Buddy Hield.

“The Atlanta Hawks are trading Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to the Charlotte Hornets for Dorian Finney-Smith, the team announced on Tuesday. The Hornets are expected to waive Nembhard as part of the trade, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania," ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk wrote.

However, the move for Hield was just a temporary one for Charlotte. The team would quickly turn Hield into young guard Rob Dillingham, making another trade with the Chicago Bulls.

“The Chicago Bulls are trading Rob Dillingham to the Charlotte Hornets for Buddy Hield and cash, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Saturday. Dillingham, the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NBA draft and still just 21 years old, is being traded less than a year after landing in Chicago at the trade deadline last season,” ESPN wrote.

Throughout this entire process, Ryan Nembhard was expected to be waived by the Hornets. After the trade on Saturday, Charlotte finally waived him, sending Nembhard to waivers.

“Charlotte is finally waiving Ryan Nembhard as expected after agreeing earlier today to its Buddy Hield-for-Rob Dillingham swap, league sources say,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote.

Nembhard was undrafted out of college and still has some interest around the league. There is a chance he gets claimed off waivers, but if he doesn’t, there are already some teams with interest.

It is a move Charlotte had to make for both cap and roster reasons. Nembhard has grit and is very shifty early in his career. If he puts it all together, he could have a career in the NBA.
