After multiple losing seasons in a row, the Chicago White Sox have made the postseason, securing an AL wild card spot with a matchup against the AL West division winner on the horizon.
It's been an incredible season for the White Sox, and they would not have been able to get here without a lot of breakout seasons coinciding at the same time. But one of the key seasons that's flown under the radar a bit has been one cheap $1.25 million signing.
As USA Today's Bob Nightengale highlighted, Randal Grichuk, released by the New York Yankees and then signed by the White Sox, has been a "godsend" for the White Sox in 2026 thanks to some incredible play this season.
Why Randal Grichuk has been a 'godsend' for White Sox
"Randal Grichuk, who was released by the Yankees and signed a $1.25 million contract, has been an absolute godsend for the White Sox," Nightengale writes.
Grichuk played 16 games with the Yankees, posting -0.3 bWAR with a .535 OPS. His release made sense. But when the White Sox picked him up for cheap, his production couldn't have been expected.
In 100 games for the White Sox, Grichuk has posted 1.6 bWAR for the season. In his 231 at-bats, Grichuk has 69 hits, 32 runs scored, 31 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 42 RBIs, 10 walks, a .299 batting average, and a .917 OPS.

Grichuk has been a right-handed platoon bat for the White Sox in the outfield, and he's been an incredible asset all season long for the White Sox.
While Munetaka Murakami, Tristan Peters, Miguel Vargas, and plenty of others have impressed this season, what Grichuk has done for the White Sox cannot be understated.
He isn't the sole reason for the successful season, but he's been a key ingredient in the outfield, producing at a high level on offense and defense, enough to get the White Sox into the postseason this year.
As Nightengale noted, Grichuk has been a "godsend" for the White Sox, as he's been about the best bang-for-their-buck as any player could've been this season.
