From RJ Mitte to Catherine O'Hara to Presley Gerber, 2026 has seen the untimely deaths of plenty of celebrities. The life of a child star, in particular, seems particularly fraught with difficulties that most people never face. From freak accidents to long-standing struggles, here are 10 stars who found fame at a young age and, unfortunately, met an untimely end:
Presley Gerber, son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Randy Gerber, and brother of Kaia Gerber, signed with IMG models at just 15. He worked successfully as a model for a number of years, but in his 20s, he pivoted his focus to talking openly about his struggles with mental health and sobriety, namely, his opioid addiction.
In March, he posted a video of himself from a wellness clinic in Mexico, sharing that he was facing what he "had been running from." In the caption, he wrote, "I started finding my way back to myself."
Presley's mother, father, and sister all left comments on his Instagram post expressing their support.
Just three months before his death, Presley was still making the effort to talk openly about his mental health. While attending a public event with his parents, he told the audience that "the most free I felt was when I was finally honest with myself." He tragically died on September 20, 2026.
Hayden Panettiere started working at just 8 months old under the management of her mother, Lesley Vogel. At 19, she severed business ties with her mother, saying, "I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom." "You owe me," her mother reportedly replied, and walked out the door. The pair then went no-contact.
In 2022, Hayden opened up about her years-long experience with addiction to opioids and alcohol. She was just 15 when adults began to offer her "happy pills" before red carpets, and that problem developed into a full-blown addiction that resulted in the crumbling of her relationship with Wladimir Klitscko, the father of her daughter Kaya. Hayden sought help and entered rehab for eight months, and in 2022, told People that she was "just so grateful to be part of this world again."
Hayden passed away in August 2026 after an apparent overdose at age 36.
Hayden's untimely death was preceded by that of her younger brother, Jansen. In the 2000s, Jansen worked as an actor and appeared in films and television shows including Robots, Even Stevens, The X's, and Everybody Hates Chris.
Jansen Panettiere died suddenly of an enlarged heart in 2023 at just 28 years old. In a 2024 interview, Hayden said that as her only sibling, she felt like it was her job to protect him. “When I lost him," she said, "I felt like I lost half of my soul.”
As a child actor, Michelle booked over 100 commercials before landing roles in television shows such as Law & Order, All My Children, and The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
As a young adult, Michelle was loved for her roles in Ice Princess, Gossip Girl, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Michelle died at just 39 years old, recently after she reportedly received a liver transplant.
Anton Yelchin began work as a child actor after his parents immigrated to Los Angeles from Russia. As a young adult, he grew into roles like Pat in Green Room, Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation, and, most famously, Chekov in Star Trek.
In 2016, a 27-year-old Anton went down his driveway to check his mailbox when his car rolled backwards down the hill and pinned him against a brick pillar. He died of blunt traumatic asphyxia. At the time, the Jeep Cherokee was in the process of a recall due to the ease with which a driver could accidentally place the vehicle in neutral rather than park. Anton's family later reached a settlement with the company.
Cameron Boyce was a rising teen star known primarily for his roles as Luke on Disney Channel's Jesse and Carlos De Vil in The Descendants franchise. In 2019, Cameron, who was living with the condition, had a sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. He was 20 years old.
Judith Barsi was the child actor who gave us Ducky in The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven, which was her final role. She was born in Los Angeles in 1978 to parents Jószef and Maria Barsi, who had each immigrated from Hungary and met in the United States.
By 10, Judith's career was taking off, but at home, she and her mother were facing rampant abuse from her father, Jószef. As his alcohol addiction worsened, he became more controlling and violent; once, he was reported to have held a knife to his daughter's throat and threatened to cut her throat if she didn't return from a film shoot.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Judith once told friends, "I'm afraid to go home... My daddy is miserable. My daddy is drunk every day, and I know he wants to kill my mother." Judith's mother, Maria, was planning to leave Jószef and had even rented an apartment for her and her daughter's escape.
In July of 1988, Judith and Maria were murdered by Jószef. He shot Maria in the hallway of their home, and Judith in her bed. Then, he poured gasoline on them both, set fire to the home, and completed suicide. Maria Barsi was 48 years old; Judith was 10.
She's best known now for her role as Santana Lopez on Glee, but Naya Rivera started out as a child star. At 4, she appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show as well as the sitcom The Royal Family. She also made appearances in shows like Baywatch, Family Matters, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For her role on Glee, she won several awards, including a People's Choice Award, a SAG Award (which she shared with the cast of Glee for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series), and multiple ALMA Awards.
In 2020, 33-year-old Naya went for a boat outing on Lake Piru with her 4-year-old son. Naya was a strong swimmer and knew the lake well. While on their outing, the two went swimming, but when the current proved too strong, Naya exhausted her energy helping her son back onto the boat. The current overpowered her; according to reports, she raised her arm, yelled for help, and was pulled underneath the water. Her son was found alone on the boat later that afternoon; her body was found five days later.
The daughter of two vaudeville performers, Judy Garland made her first appearance onstage at just 2 years old. At 10, her controlling stage mother started her on amphetamines and sleeping pills, and at 13, she was signed to a contract with MGM.
Garland struggled with addiction her entire life. She passed away at 47 following an accidental overdose.
