The Chicago Bears made one of the NFL season's boldest decisions when they acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans. Monday night provided an immediate return.
Simmons recorded a sack and helped Chicago control Seattle's offense during a 34-17 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. The Bears improved to 6-2, winning their third consecutive game since Caleb Williams returned from a hamstring injury.
But the most interesting part of the victory was how quickly Chicago's newest defensive star influenced the game.
Simmons changed the middle of Chicago's defense
Chicago acquired Simmons in a trade that included two first-round draft picks. That is an enormous investment for a defensive player, particularly one joining a team midway through the season.

Seattle finished with only 81 rushing yards.
The Seahawks also struggled on third down, converting just one of 11 opportunities. Those numbers reflected a defense that consistently forced Seattle into uncomfortable situations.
Caleb Williams took advantage
Chicago's offense benefited from the defensive performance. Williams completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception.
He helped the Bears produce a lengthy touchdown drive on their opening possession. D'Andre Swift eventually scored three rushing touchdowns, providing the finishing touches on Chicago's offensive possessions.
The Bears also responded effectively after Seattle cut the deficit to 20-17 during the fourth quarter. Chicago immediately answered with another touchdown drive, then added a final score after a Sam Darnold interception.

A statement beyond one victory
The Seahawks entered Monday as the defending champions, but their season has become increasingly difficult. Seattle dropped to 4-4 and has lost three of its last four games.
Chicago, meanwhile, is gaining momentum. The Bears have improved offensively since Williams returned, and Simmons gives their defense another player capable of changing games.
One performance does not prove that a trade involving multiple first-round picks will become a long-term success.
But Monday demonstrated why Chicago was willing to make the investment.
The Bears needed a stronger defensive front. Simmons immediately helped provide one. With Chicago now 6-2, the possibility of a meaningful postseason run looks increasingly realistic.
