The Los Angeles Lakers are now being led by Luka Doncic after LeBron James departed from the organization. Doncic is back in a familiar role, similar to the one he held during his time with the Dallas Mavericks.
Throughout the offseason, Doncic made it clear that he was happy to be in Los Angeles. When Mark Walter took over ownership of the organization, the superstar wasted no time sending a message.
“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I'm excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA. I've gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise. I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together," Doncic posted.
The Lakers got their season off to a strong start by dominating the Golden State Warriors. Hours before the game, Doncic wrote a letter to the fans.
“Dear LA, Tonight we start our run for a championship. Every player dreams of holding that trophy. To do it for all of you amazing fans would mean everything to us," Doncic wrote.
Then, just minutes before tipoff at the arena, he delivered another message. This time, he spoke directly to the fans and promised that the season would be special.
“Thank you for supporting us. It's the start of something new. It's gonna be a special season, so thank you for the support,” Doncic told the fans.
Doncic is fully embracing his new role as the team's leader and franchise superstar. What he is doing is exciting for the fanbase, but after making that promise, the Lakers will need to deliver a special season to live up to expectations.
If the team continues to play the way it did Wednesday night, there is no doubt LA will make plenty of fans happy. The new duo of Walker Kessler and Doncic could make life a nightmare for opposing teams.
