Martha Stewart Quickly Deleted A Photo Of Her “Horrendously Tacky” And “Gross” Halloween Costume And Issued Two Apologetic Statements — Here’s What She Said

If you were on social media over Halloweekend, you might’ve seen a heap of backlash against Martha Stewart’s controversial costume.

In a photo that has since been deleted from her page, the multimillionaire could be seen in ripped jeans with dirt on her face, holding up a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

According to the Guardian, Martha’s caption promoted her candle range.

The post quickly received an influx of critical comments, not least given that amid the current economic crisis, there are hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone currently experiencing homelessness. “The ultra wealthy are so damn EXHAUSTING,” one person commented, while another wrote on Reddit, “The level of out of touch is stellar.”

“the 1%'s villainy is just cartoonish,” one comment read. “This is disgusting. I have no respect for her anymore,” another said.

“Dear God that’s absolutely vile. Poking fun at those less fortunate than her when she is now in a privileged position,” someone wrote, adding that it’s “beyond GROSS to make fun of” unhoused people. One more person said, “Americans are struggling financially. This might end her career.”

Martha’s post was quickly deleted amid the backlash, and before long, she claimed that her costume was “intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness.”

“I’ve spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween — sharing fun, festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas and giving tips on entertaining and hosting to make the most of one of my favorite holidays of the year,” she told People magazine. “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.

“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic,” Martha added. “I am committed to continuing to make a difference.”

Hours later, Martha issued a second statement to her Instagram page, in which she apologized for her “insensitive” costume.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough,” she wrote. “I know many people are economically struggling. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I’m very sorry.”

Martha’s second statement now appears to have been deleted from her Instagram page, too. Let us know what you think in the comments.
