Mason Miller trade proposal with Dodgers makes little sense for Padres

1 week ago 19

Mason Miller was a hot topic at the trade deadline, but the San Diego Padres opted to keep him in the closer role for the postseason.

Miller led the National League with 38 saves and struck out 16.6 batters per nine innings in 66 appearances in 2026.

It's highly plausible more teams will reach out to the Padres about Miller's services this offseason.

Could the Los Angeles Dodgers be one of them?

"The Dodgers don’t necessarily need Miller, but they love to acquire star players. He would provide more certainty as the closer than Edwin Diaz or left-hander Tanner Scott," FanSided's John Perrotta.

Perrotta's trade proposal sends outfielder Mike Sirota, the No. 19 prospect in baseball, to the Padres for Miller.

"Because of their outstanding outfield depth, the Dodgers could offer Sirota, their No. 3 prospect and No. 19 overall.

"The 23-year-old would likely begin next season as the Padres’ left fielder and provide a significant upgrade over the Dustin Harris/Samad Taylor platoon," Perrotta added.

In theory, this trade idea makes sense for the Padres. However, they should be looking to keep Miller and add another outfielder via free agency or the trade market.

Plus, Sirota has only played 71 games at Double-A and two games at Triple-A in his minor league career.

At 23, the right-handed hitter may require more development before making an everyday impact in the Majors.

I'm also not sure that Sirota by himself is worth the next three years of Miller's contract.

The flamethrower will hit the free agent market in 2030.
