Here are 25 of their most devastating responses:
1. "No celebrity death hit me as hard as losing Dolly Parton. She was like a favorite aunt."
In 2026, the country music legend died from cancer at age 80. In an Instagram video, her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said, "By her example, we believed that anything was possible. She never saw a door she couldn't open, and the doors she opened made and changed history. My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family, whether you liked it or not."
In 2026, the iconic 71-year-old actor died from a pulmonary embolism. Rectal cancer was also linked to her death. At the Actor Awards, she posthumously won the Female Actor in a Comedy Series award for The Studio. Accepting the role on her behalf, series creator Seth Rogen said, "She really showed that you can be a genius and be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other in any way, shape, or form."
In 2006, the Crocodile Hunter was filming an underwater documentary at Batt Reef. While he was snorkeling, his chest was pierced by a stingray. He died at age 44. In a 2021 Instagram tribute, his daughter, Bindi, who's now a parent herself, wrote, "I wish that Dad could hug my beautiful girl. It's been 15 years since he passed away. I hold on to the thought that he’s her guardian angel now, watching over the most special part of my life, Grace."
The Gen V actor died in a motorcycle crash in 2024. He was only 27. His character, Andre Anderson, wasn't recast for Season 2 because "no one can replace Chance." In a statement, the series producers said, "Instead, we have been taking the time and space to recraft our Season 2 storylines as we begin production in May. We will honor Chance and his legacy this season." On the show, Andre died while trying to help others escape the Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center.
5. "Chester Bennington. One of the greatest voices of my time. He is greatly missed."
The Linkin Park singer died by suicide at age 41 in 2017. He had long been open about his issues with alcohol. According to his longtime friend Ryan Shuck, he celebrated six months of sobriety a month before his death. However, Ryan believes that he "had a couple of drinks" before his death. Additionally, Chester's death came two months after his close friend Chris Cornell also died by suicide. Ryan told Rolling Stone, "It could be a part of it, but it's a small part of it. I think that it's just another horrible event that gets put in your subconscious. It's kindling, but the fire was already burning."
6. "Karen Carpenter, who died too young."
In 1983, the 32-year-old Carpenters singer died from heart failure, which was caused by the physiological stress of her private struggles with anorexia. As she rose to pop stardom, her insecurities about her appearance worsened. In the years before her death, she underwent extreme weight loss that caused her to cancel tours after collapsing onstage. At the time, the public didn't really know what anorexia was, but her death made more people aware of the eating disorder.
7. "Natalie Wood, who died under suspicious circumstances. We will likely never know the truth."
The 43-year-old Rebel Without a Cause actor drowned in 1981. On Thanksgiving weekend, Natalie and her husband, Robert Wagner, took their yacht out. Christopher Walken and skipper Dennis Davern joined them. In his memoir, Pieces of My Heart: A Life, Robert claimed that he confronted Christopher over a remark he made about Natalie's career. He said she went to bed before the fight, but she wasn't there when he went to bed. He couldn't find her anywhere, and the dinghy from the yacht was gone, too. Eventually, around 7:30 in the morning, the Coast Guard found Natalie's body separated from the dinghy. She had bruises and a blood alcohol content of 0.14%.
Initially, Natalie's death was ruled an "accidental drowning." However, in 2011, the investigation was reopened after Dennis told the authorities about an alleged argument that Natalie and Robert had shortly before she died (he'd previously withheld this information). Robert became "more of a person of interest," but in 2022, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officially cleared him of involvement. Her case remains opened and unsolved.
8. "I just read about the death of Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes [at age 30 in 2002] earlier today. She was in Honduras when she died in a car accident. A few weeks before this, a car she was riding in hit and killed a little boy who had stepped into the road. She said she felt like it was meant to be her that died and not him."
9. "Rob and Michele Reiner. Utter disbelief at this tragedy."
In 2025, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died in an apparent homicide. Their then-27-year-old daughter, Romy, found Rob's body at their house after a massage therapist who couldn't access the property contacted her. She reportedly "fled," and a paramedic later told her that her mom had died as well — both from apparent stab wounds. Romy's older brother, Nick, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty.
Allegedly, that night, Rob and Nick loudly argued at Conan O'Brien's holiday party. Prosecutors believe that Nick "committed the murders by means of lying in wait." In a statement, his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene said, "Nick has a serious mental illness and a long history of struggling with self-medication. His circumstances are a tragic example of how difficult it can be for people experiencing significant mental health challenges to access and navigate the treatment and support they need. Nothing can undo the profound loss experienced by the Reiner family and those who loved them. Our hearts remain with the family." The trial is ongoing.
10. "Oliver Tree hit me really hard. He died in a helicopter crash [at age 32 in 2026]. A lot of his music was about death, as he had this affinity for living life to the fullest. He was unapologetically himself, and I really looked up to him. I often think how scary it must have been in his final moments, and I hope he's able to find some peace in the afterlife."
11. "Might be a bit niche, but Jonghyun from the boy group SHINee. His death happened the night of my 16th birthday, and it really shook newly 16-year-old me."
In 2017, the K-pop star died by suicide. He was 27. His sister called the police to inform them that she was worried he might be attempting suicide, and they found him unconscious in a Seoul apartment. He was in cardiac arrest, and he was taken to the emergency room. After his death, his close friend and fellow singer Nine9 posted a note he'd asked her to make public if he "disappeared from the world." Jonghyun wrote, "I was broken from the inside. ... The life of fame was never meant for me. ... What else can I say more. Just tell me I've done well. That this is enough. That I've worked hard. Even if you can't smile don't fault me on my way."
In 1994, the Nirvana singer died by suicide at age 27. Kurt struggled with drug misuse and depression. He'd been missing for six days when an electrician found his body in the greenhouse over his garage. In his bloodstream, there were traces of Valium and a high concentration of heroin.
13. "Princess Diana. She went through a very rough public divorce and came out of it with her dignity intact. Then she fell in love with a new guy, only to get hounded and chased by the paparazzi who couldn't leave her alone. Such a tragic way to die so young."
The 36-year-old princess died in a car crash in 1997. Diana and Dodi Fayed, a close friend with whom she was romantically linked, were being driven around Paris in a black Mercedes. However, paparazzi tailed the car, leading to a high-speed chase. In an underground tunnel, the driver lost control of the vehicle. It was later found that the driver had a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. All three people in the car died.
14. "Stephen 'tWitch' Boss — you never know what people are dealing with."
The 40-year-old dancer and DJ died by suicide in 2022. His wife, Allison Holker, told Today, "There's no one that saw this coming. I feel so sad that he was so there, and we weren't in the knowing. He wanted to be the strong one for everyone, and I think that was a little scary for him, that he might've needed to ask for help. People say a lot of like, 'What were the signs?' and you know, he was so much love and light. He really wanted to be everyone's Superman — he said that a lot. He could hold so much for people. It was hard for him to process that at the end."
15. "For me, it's Matthew Perry. It's been three years, and I'm still so devastated. I wish I could go back in time and prevent his accident that started his addiction to painkillers and drugs. He was so precious, talented, and funny."
The 54-year-old Friends actor was found dead in his Jacuzzi. The primary cause of death was "acute effects of ketamine," and the secondary cause was drowning. Matthew wrote candidly about his struggles with drug addiction in Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. His pill addiction began after he was thrown from a Jet Ski and injured his neck.
At the time, he was filming Fools Rush In, and a doctor who came to set gave him a pill. Matthew said, "As the pill kicked in, something clicked in me. And it's been that click that I've been chasing the rest of my life. … I couldn't believe how good I felt; I was in complete and pure euphoria... I swear to God, I think if I'd never taken it, none of the next three decades would have gone the way they did." Within 18 months, he was taking more than 55 pills each day. He wrote that, during Friends Season 3, his "Vicodin habit had now kicked in badly," and his addiction felt like "a full-time job."
16. "I was just a kid, but when John Candy died, it broke my heart. I loved his movies, especially Uncle Buck. We had it on VHS, and I watched it all the time. It was a long time before I could watch his movies again and laugh/smile instead of just feeling such sadness. I watched the documentary that came out last year about him, and it was really good. I'm glad I watched it alone, though, because I cried a lot. 😔"
In 1994, while he was in Mexico filming Wagons East, the comedy legend died of a heart attack in his sleep. He was 43. His Planes, Trains & Automobiles costar Steve Martin told People, "John's comedy lives on, but my memory of him has the words 'kindness' and 'sweetness' in the headlines."
17. "I remember when Chris Farley died. It was pretty messed up."
In 1997, the Saturday Night Live legend died from an accidental drug overdose at age 33. For many years, Chris had dealt with addictions to drugs, alcohol, and food. Four days before his death, he began partying and spiraled downward. His little brother, John, found his body on the floor of his apartment. In the documentary I Am Chris Farley, his close friend, Father Matt Foley, said, "He died alone on a linoleum floor. It was not what we wanted for him or what he wanted for himself."
18. "Natasha Richardson."
In 2009, the 45-year-old actor took her two sons on a ski trip while her husband, Liam Neeson, was away shooting a movie. Natasha fell and hit her head during a private skiing lesson on the beginner's trail. At first, she felt fine and, after being examined at a nearby clinic, she signed a medical waiver, unaware that she had a brain bleeding injury. Two days later, she died from an epidural hematoma. In 2020, Liam told Inquirer.net, "I speak to her every day at her grave, which is about a mile and a half down the road. I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she's here. Not that she answers me."
19. "Lee Thompson Young. Such a successful Disney actor who moved into a great career but fought bipolar depression. Gone way too young."
In 2013, the The Famous Jett Jackson star died by suicide at age 29. His mom, Velma Love, told WIS10, "In his late teenage years, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and I noticed some periods of sadness, and that stabilized quickly. Some of a person's inner life, you really don't know."
20. "Dimebag Darrell's murder at age 38 in 2004. He was one of the greatest guitarists. Incredibly skilled. Shot by a 'fan' while on stage performing with his new band. The dude killed a few other people, too. Death is always something that causes grief, but sometimes it does MORE than that."
In 2009, the Dirty Dancing actor died of pancreatic cancer at age 57. In her memoir, Worth Fighting For, his wife, Lisa Niemi, wrote, "My last words to Patrick? 'I love you,' and those were his last words to me. After I brought him home, things went very fast. I cherished our time alone, holding his hand, listening to music, sleeping with my arm around him, my head on his shoulder, wordlessly."
22. "Elvis!!! Who can forget him? He was utterly handsome, had an awesome voice, and was generous to his friends. But those pills took over him. So sad."
In 1977, the King of Rock and Roll died from cardiac arrhythmia. He was 42. His fiancé, Ginger Alden, found his body on the floor of the bathroom at Graceland. His death has since been linked to health issues as well as long-term prescription drug use.
While traveling for his comedy tour in 2022, the 65-year-old Full House actor reportedly "accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it, and went to sleep." He died from head trauma. In a statement, his family said, "In the weeks since Bob's passing, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob's fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful. As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter."
24. "Atsushi Sakurai, prolific musician and frontman of Buck-Tick, died of a brainstem hemorrhage after taking ill at a fan club concert in Japan. He was 57. His death was nearly three years ago, and I still can't get my head around how suddenly he was snatched out of existence. My heart also breaks for his bandmates of over 35 years who were sharing the stage with him and weren't initially aware he'd taken ill and been helped off stage."
25. And finally: "Christa McAuliffe. I was 10 years old when the Challenger exploded, and the death of such a great teacher devastated me. It would have been so cool to see the lessons she taught from space."
In 1986, Christa — a high school social studies teacher who'd been chosen from 11,000 applicants to be the first teacher in space — boarded the Challenger. It was extremely cold out, and engineers had warned NASA about the potential dangers, but they went ahead with the rocket launch. However, the space shuttle exploded a mere 73 seconds after launch, killing all seven astronauts inside. Later investigations determined that the cold had caused a malfunction with the booster rockets' rubber gaskets. Across the country, many students — including Christa's own — watched the tragedy unfold on live TV.
