Ever since we bought our house, I wanted to install permanent outdoor lights. But eight months later, I still hadn't installed them. My procrastination stemmed from a fear of disappointment: What I wanted was far more than I could pull off on my own and without extra equipment. My house has a beautiful, oversized deck and an awesome gable with a massive window and high peaks, and learning to rent and operate a boom lift was daunting. But recently, setting my fears aside, I decided to get started.

I went with 150 feet of these Lepro outdoor string lights and carved out an afternoon to install them. And while 150 feet isn't enough for my ambitions—I plan to rent that boom lift and add more lights around the deck and the peaks of my house—the lights I installed are absolutely beautiful. I set an automation for the lights to turn on each evening, and I can use the app to change the colors whenever I want, like for Christmas or Halloween.

What do you think so far?

I love these permanent outdoor lights. If you want to install your own, here's everything I used to install mine, minus a ladder I already owned. And while you're here, I hope you follow along with my adventures as a first-time homeowner trying to make my house into the coolest house in the neighborhood. I invite you to follow along on our official Instagram, official YouTube, or my personal Instagram. So far, I've been doing one-person jobs—cleaning my garbage bins, installing outdoor lights, and building an outdoor fire pit—but that's just the beginning. I hope to see you along the way.
