The Golden State Warriors are ready for the upcoming season, and it is going to be an interesting one. For the first time in a while, the team is heading into a season where it is not expected to make the playoffs.
This entire summer, all eyes have been on Steph Curry as he had contract discussions surrounding him. There was also his lingering knee issue from last season.
“There's at least some lingering concern about the knee. From what I've been told, it can be managed, but it has to be managed and that's a new thing for Steph because people always say he is the most conditioned guy in the League and now he has to manage a knee. I guess we'll find out, but from what I understand, he and his trainers have devised ways to kind of work around that and sort of support that whole possibility of the knee not being as great as he wants it to be. So, I'm curious to see how it turns out, but Steph seemed pretty confident that he'll be able to go out there and put out 70+ games,” NBC Sports’ Marcus Poole said.
During media day, Curry made it very clear that his knee will be ready to go.
“Knee's feeling great. Ready to go. No issues. I feel a lot stronger and understanding of what I'm dealing with,” Curry said.
However, a recent comment from Curry could provide a different perspective on how he plans to manage his knee throughout the season. The Warriors star is focused on staying ahead of the issue.
“It will hopefully transition into a steady, kind of, the ebbs and flows of the season, where I know what I'm doing on recovery days, I know what I'm doing in practice to stay sharp, and then games, I know how many minutes I'm going to play and can kind of go and just be free. So, it's kind of a constant throughline of beginning of the offseason to through this year where I hopefully stay ahead of it,” Curry stated.
While Curry may be healthy now, his comments show that managing his knee will remain an important part of his preparation throughout the season. There is a plan in place, but staying healthy will require Curry to remain consistent with how he manages his body.
Curry will have to follow his recovery and preparation routines to be ready every night. If he falls behind with his management plan, it could potentially create issues later in the season. For now, Curry believes his knee is in a good place, but the fact that he is focused on having to “stay ahead” of a lingering issue adds another layer to his situation heading into the season.
