Why the WNBA did not suspend A'ja Wilson for decisive Fever-Aces Game 3

A'ja Wilson is available to play for the Las Vegas Aces in Thursday night's winner-take-all Game 3 at Michelob Ultra Arena.

The WNBA's decision comes after a nerve-wracking day-plus of speculation and intrigue after Wilson confronted a Fever fan in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 99-89 loss at Gainbridge Arena.

The WNBA has determined there will be no fine or penalty handed down to A'ja Wilson or any other Aces players following Tuesday's Game 2 interaction with a fan, a league source tells The Athletic. https://t.co/uK53zEQGMz

Wilson contends -- and video evidence corroborates -- that a Fever fan stood up from his seat behind the Indiana basket and pointed at the Aces superstar before ostensibly directing comments toward her.

Wilson responded by gesturing toward the man and screaming at him as his companion pulled him back into his seat. After the game, Wilson decried the "unacceptable" incident and apologized to her teammates.

The WNBA has deemed that Wilson did not enter the stands, which would have resulted in her suspension for Game 3. Instead, the league found that the reigning MVP was in the "player escape lane" and thus still on the playing surface.

A'ja Wilson was deemed to be in the court area's "player escape lane" rather than in the stands, which is why she was not ejected, per @anniecostabile. https://t.co/RoPbwxJwwN

Had Wilson ventured completely into the stands, she would have been suspended automatically.

The news is big for the Aces, who are trying to keep their bid for a fourth WNBA championship in five years alive on Thursday.

After a dominant Game 1 win, Las Vegas struggled to contain Indiana on the interior in Game 2. Ahead of their eighth postseason meeting in the past year, the Aces and the Fever will put everything on the line in Game 3 -- and the best player on either team will be there.
