Yankees targeting Trent Grisham replacement after $22 million disaster

1 week ago 9

Trent Grisham had a disappointing season for the New York Yankees on both sides of the ball.

Grisham, who accepted the Yankees' $22 million qualifying offer last offseason, hit .211/.308/.395 with 18 home runs.

In center field, Grisham had -8 defensive runs saved and -6 outs above average. Those are very poor numbers for a former two-time Gold Glove Award winner.

As an impending free agent, a reunion between Grisham and the Yankees feels unlikely.

The New York Post's Joel Sherman reports the AL East organization is keeping their eyes on Washington Nationals center fielder Jacob Young.

Young is a tremendous defender, ranking second in the National League with 13 defensive runs saved as a center fielder.

However, his offensive production has not caught up with his glove.

"Personally, we’re not sold on Young being a game-changing addition. Defensive metrics are notoriously subjective, and he owns a lifetime .652 OPS over nearly 1,500 career plate appearances.

"If the Yankees do add the 27-year-old Young, then we suggest platooning him with Jones, as the former has mashed left-handed pitching in his career," FanSided's Jake Elman wrote.

Young hit .282 with three homers and a .776 OPS in 149 at-bats against lefties in 2026.

Those aren't eye-popping numbers, but Young's defense is strong enough that it could force manager Aaron Boone to give him some starts against southpaws.

Grisham's tenure with the Yankees is more than likely over, and Cashman will be looking for an extra outfielder this winter. Young is someone to keep an eye on.
