With age comes wisdom and the power to say, "Actually, I'm not gonna do that anymore, but thanks so much! Byeeeee!"
This sentiment really resonated with the BuzzFeed Community because when we posted about the topic recently, people were popping off in the comments with even more things older people are officially done with. As someone on the wrong side of 35, this list gave me so much hope. Here's what people had to share:
1. "There's too much background noise everywhere. I’m almost 50 and spent a lot of my youth at the front of rock concerts, and while I’m not deaf yet, everywhere I go, it’s so damn LOUD. Sometimes the music in restaurants, bars, and supermarkets is so loud that it's hard to concentrate on what people are saying. If I end up with any sort of hearing loss, I worry that I won’t be able to go out and enjoy myself anywhere."
2. "Weddings. I hate going to them — especially outdoor weddings. You’ll get a gift whether I go or not, but I'd rather sit at home in my air conditioning drinking my own non-watered-down drinks. In the end, you’ll save on me not being at the reception. It's a win-win"
3. "I hate going to a restaurant and having to scan a QR code to see a menu. Just give me the paper menu instead, PLEASE! I like to peruse the list, and I usually forget what I wanted before the server comes back, so then I have to go through the hassle again to open the menu on my phone."
4. "So many choices for everything. I spend so much time researching and reading reviews when shopping online, trying to avoid garbage, that sometimes I just give up. I guess it saves me a lot of money in the long run."
5. "SEX!! In my mid-50s, it has become overrated. What I found to be natural and fun in my younger days has become a hassle. Good company, enjoying a hobby, or playing a sport is better than sex, in my humble opinion. Or as young people would say, IMO!"
6. "I focused so much on my looks that it became part of my identity and became my main currency. Once I left high school, I got even more obsessed and completely neglected working on any REAL issues in my life. I wanted to hang on to pretty privilege so badly, but at the same time I was so incredibly insecure. I started getting acne at 11, and it’s never left. I missed out on so many cute outfits or even just enjoying the beach because I was obsessing over my bacne. My discovery that a tanning bed made the acne marks on my back less visible did damage to my skin I can’t undo, and it was by no means worth it — I was still insecure anyway. The entire time I had pretty privilege, I didn't even enjoy it."
"I simply do not care anymore. It’s been one of the most freeing things to go to the store barefaced, acne visible, wearing a pair of shorts and my cellulite out, and just being happy to be invited to the party. If I want to wear a halter top, I do, acne be damned. I’m the same as anyone else and have days where I’m not feeling myself, but god, what a RELIEF."
7. "Daylight savings time really does hit harder once you start working 9-to-5 type jobs. When I worked without a window view, I’d see daylight when I went to the restroom, and that was it. It’s so depressing. Everyone should have access to natural light. It’s so unhealthy to never see the sun. Winter has become painful."
8. "I need to preface my comment by saying I’m typing this on my phone, but I’m so sick of cellphones! I appreciate the vast amounts of ease they offer humans, but to be tethered to your phone, to stop interacting in three dimensions with the people and things all around you, to constantly need to take photos of every blasted thing you encounter, and to lose your ability to function if you lose your phone — I can’t even put into words how sad that is. I love live music, but get so irritated when I’m watching a performance and see 300 people looking at their cellphone screens while they record it rather than actually LOOKING at the performance happening in front of them. Stop filtering every experience you have through your cellphone. Put it down and leave it there so you can take in the experience with your own senses."
9. "When I hit 30, I stopped going to clubs after one night of sardine-packed, smoke-filled, and under-30 partygoers ruining it for me. Plus, I'm over long lines and wearing heels; being comfortable is more important. I have become quieter and learned that I don't need it anymore."
10. "Now that I’m older, I can’t stand the smell of marijuana. I’m just so over the stench. If you had told 20-something me I’d be like this in the future, 20-something me would not have believed a word of it."
11. "I haven't gone to a concert to see a band for some time now. With everyone screaming the lyrics along with the song, I can't even hear the band. Thank god jazz and classical music are mostly instrumental, and have a more sophisticated audience."
12. "Over the weekend, my internet went out. I tried using AT&T's troubleshooting bot and then was connected to someone on a 'live chat.' I was instantly disconnected. Lather, rinse, repeat four more times before I finally gave up and called. Cut to me yelling 'representative' and 'actual human being' into the phone multiple times before finally getting a human being to tell me that a technician would have to come and look at it. I was so frustrated by the time I got an actual human being on the phone, I was probably shorter with them than I should have been. I'm so over all this automated crap!"
13. "Weight loss. Screw it! I’m going to feel fat anyway; might as well eat and enjoy my life."
14. "Rudeness. Common courtesy seems to be a thing of the past, and basic manners are not being taught to most kids. Those kids grow up to be entitled, insufferable adults. I honestly believe that etiquette class should be a requirement in elementary school…unfortunately, that’s what it’s come to."
15. "Subscription services for everything. Let me pay for the software ONCE and let me own it. $70/year for antivirus? GFY."
16. "I've had enough of working in the office. I’m not a social person, so all I want to do is get to work, do what I have to do, and go home. Working from home, I don’t have to deal with the BS small talk."
17. "For many years, I worked for corporations that had long, unnecessary meetings that I would take minutes for. Boring! I'm 68, and now I only work part-time selling beer at concerts and soccer games. It's fun for me to be around a lot of noise and people every couple of weeks."
18. "I’m DEFINITELY tired of other people’s music. Maybe I just grew up in a quiet area, but it’s become more of a problem in the last 15-20 years. Aside from some rando with a battery-powered boombox, you weren’t really forced to hear other people’s music while out and about. Now it’s just everywhere with people’s car stereos blasting, people subjecting their entire neighborhood to whatever shitty music they’re partying with, and douchebags who think everyone on public transit should be forced to hear their shitty taste in music. Just stop. Wear headphones, keep your music at a level where you can have a conversation, or just go have a party at an EVENT SPACE and spare your neighbors."
19. "I will no longer own a car without air conditioning. I did that all through my 20s, and that is a hard pass now."
20. "Caring about underwear lines. Thongs are so uncomfortable — why should I care if somebody else knows that I wear undies?"
21. "I’m tired of always going above and beyond for no recognition. Now I don’t work unless I get paid. I don’t deal with BS or spare others' feelings. I’m fine with being the cranky bitch in my department and fighting back against people throwing their work on me. I’m 46 years old and JUST received my first-ever promotion. I was always hired to fix other people’s mistakes, but now I’m done."
22. "I hate the people who use the grocery store as their chatting spot. Especially when it's two people sitting with their carts in the middle of the aisle, literally making it impossible to get through. If I could, I would 1,000% order online and pick up at the store, but I have so many allergies that I have to be there in person since online services often don't have clear product information. Go talk somewhere else!"
23. "A wise friend once said that once you become an adult, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. For me, that means I don’t go camping. I don’t enjoy it, and I don’t ever have to do it, so I don’t. I’m too old to be sleeping on the ground or cooking food over a campfire."
24. "I’m 41 and refuse to multitask anymore. When I was younger, I would pay bills online, text, eat lunch, and work all at the same time. Not anymore. I focus on one thing at a time."
25. "I’m middle-aged, and I don’t want to spend money, sit in traffic, and find parking just to hang with a friend. Please just come over, wear comfy clothes, let’s eat edibles and make weird concoctions to eat, watch movies, and just vibe and talk about everything in the universe."
26. "I’m tired of companies making obvious mistakes and then going public saying: 'This is new to us… We’re learning from our mistakes,' or 'We didn’t know…,' etc. Both statements reflect poor leadership, poor critical thinking, ignorance, and greed. Man-made issues are the same in any generation. If you are not asking, 'What happens when people use our stuff for illegal purposes? Or bad things happen because of our stuff, then what do we do to stop it?' then you and your company are part of the problem. There are a lot of experienced people out there who will remind you of these problems. You choose not to hire them."
27. "I am tired of scripts in movies or TV shows that feel the need to show people puking. I'm also tired of writers who drop so many F-bombs in their scripts that it's like a miasma."
28. "I’m tired of being stressed. It’s exhausting and just saps the joy out of every day. It's become so normalized that I'm not sure how to escape it."
29. "When I was younger, I would go places and do things with my friends that I really didn’t want to do (go to a concert, even though I didn’t care for the band, go whitewater rafting, even though I’m scared to death of the water, etc.), but I did them for the acceptance of my friends. Today, nah, I’m good. We don’t have to share every experience, or like all the same things, in order to be friends. And if that means that I have fewer friends, so be it."
Now that you're older, what things do you just not have time for anymore? Tell me what things and why they bother you in the comments, or use the anonymous form below. Your response may be featured in an upcoming BuzzFeed article!
