30 Shocking And Slightly Creepy Halloween Pictures From Over The Years That Will 100% Make You Reconsider Your Love For Spooky Season

I love Halloween. Seeing people pull up in the craziest costumes, houses decked out in spooky decorations, and children running down the block screaming "trick or treat" is one of my favorite sights of the year.

Halloween traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. Over time, the tradition evolved, and dressing up in costumes became a way to ward off wandering spirits and eventually turned into the spooky, fun-filled celebration we know today.

It got me thinking about what Halloween actually looked like decades ago. I mean, we have entire stores filled with costumes and decorations today, but what did people do before you could just walk into a shop and pick up a ready-made witch outfit or a creepy mask? Naturally, I went down a very deep rabbit hole looking for old photographs, and let me tell you, some of these are fascinating, while others are downright creepy.

So, here are 30 pictures that show us what Halloween has looked like over the years, and how much (or how little) things have changed.

1. I have so many questions about this pumpkin head, but I have to respect the commitment to the bit. Halloween costumes have gotten a lot more elaborate since 1865, but this homemade getup has a creepy charm of its own.

2. I can't get over how seriously everyone is posing for this photo. The setup is creepy enough on its own, but something about the costumes and those completely straight faces makes the whole thing feel like a still from a very old horror movie.

3. For a Halloween party in 1928, this isn't half bad, but the lack of genuinely creepy decorations is making me laugh (nervously, obv). Those smiling pumpkins look more like they're welcoming guests to a dinner party than a Halloween bash.

4. This photo shows a trio of kids ready for trick-or-treating, and those ghost masks made from old pillowcases are something else. I don't think I've seen such a simple costume look this creepy before.

5. I thought I'd seen some pretty unusual Halloween costumes, but a woman dressed as three candles wasn't exactly on my list. Apparently, this was part of a Pageant of the Superstitions at an All Halloween Ball in 1930.

6. This person in a homemade mummy costume from 1935 is EXACTLY what appears in my nightmares. I would absolutely not want to run into this thing in a dark hallway.

7. I genuinely don't know where to look first in this photo. The entire group looks like they belong in a very disturbing historical portrait, especially with those questionable mustaches.

8. This 1935 photo has me doing a double take because why are all these celebrities (yes, they are celebs and not random people) dressed up as babies in little prams? I have so many questions about how this costume idea came about.

9. I can clearly see that group costumes were all the rage back then. Everyone showed up in matching witch outfits, and not a single person seems to have missed the memo.

10. So people were planting pumpkin seeds in the shape of a cross outside our doors to keep witches away? This postcard actually spells out the instructions. Man, Halloween came with some pretty wild superstitions back then.

11. This photo of guests arriving at a Halloween party in 1956 is giving me actual chills. The giant creepy mask at the entrance, the skeleton hands, and that little rabbit decoration on the door make this look less like a fancy dress party and more like a scene straight out of an alien invasion movie. WELP.

12. Believe it or not, this photo shows an actual Girl Scout leader teaching children the dos and don'ts of throwing a Halloween party. I can't get over the fact that the second rule is to "serve nutritious foods." It makes sense that even Halloween treats came with a health-conscious reminder back then.

13. This is the kind of Halloween photo that makes me question what people considered a perfectly normal party costume in the 1950s. A clown being casually hugged by someone wearing a giant skeletal mask is such an unhinged combination. I wouldn't know whether to laugh or run.

14. A couple showing up as Sputnik and a Soviet officer in 1957 is such a specific choice, and I like that they committed to the theme. Sputnik had only launched weeks earlier, so this was basically dressing up as the biggest news story of the moment.

15. Whoever decided witches should take their Halloween costumes out for a spin on water skis was clearly having a good day.

16. Bobbing for apples looks fun until you realize everyone is fighting for the same few inches of space. Thank goodness we've moved on from the wide, shallow plate to bigger tubs, because the risk of people banging their heads together while trying to grab an apple feels very real here.

17. These kids aren't here for those tiny candies that come in Halloween party bags. Look at the way they're holding out their hands—they mean business, and I have a feeling they're not leaving without full-size candy bars.

18. A limousine full of people wearing these terrifying masks is not something I'd want to pull up next to at a traffic light. They look less like party guests and more like a group of villains heading to a secret meeting.

19. Darth Vader and C-3PO costumes in 1977! I wonder how many people did a double take seeing these two walking around Harvard Square. Star Wars was brand-new, and these characters were already making their way off the screen and onto the streets.

20. This is definitely not the elf costume we're used to seeing today. The poofy sleeves and oversized outfit give her a rather old-fashioned look, almost like a character from a storybook that took a slightly scary turn.

21. I have so many questions, but my biggest one is how everyone managed to make their costumes look equally terrifying and oddly elaborate.

22. I didn't know there was a time when Halloween celebrations involved taking things to the beach, but here we are. Can we talk about the sheer size of that pumpkin, though? Six women carrying a giant papier-mâché jack-o'-lantern in a witch's hat is certainly not something you see at your average coastal outing.

23. This photo of children playing Blind Man's Bluff, their old-fashioned costumes, and that heavily decorated fireplace makes the whole scene feel like something straight out of a vintage ghost story.

24. Ever had Ronald Reagan, E.T., and Yoda show up at your door on Halloween? This 1982 photo captures some of the most popular masks of the year, and I can't get over how realistic (and slightly unsettling) those full-head rubber masks look.

25. The furry suit is one thing, but that oversized cat mask with its rather creepy expressions is something else entirely. I don't think I'd be particularly thrilled to open my door to this on Halloween night.

26. This is exactly what I mean when I say Halloween costumes have come a long way. These kids are walking out of a novelty shop with their masks and Halloween goodies, and some of those faces in the shop window are honestly creepier than the costumes themselves.

27. A human banana split complete with three people dressed as scoops of ice cream and another as a bottle of chocolate sauce? The amount of planning that must have gone into this costume is something else. Also, I wasn't expecting to see fast food-inspired Halloween fashion in 1984.

28. I wasn't expecting to see a teacher dressed as a ghost at a rural schoolhouse Halloween celebration, yikes. The haystacks, carved pumpkin, and paper witches make the whole setup feel like a proper little scare scene. I wonder what the children thought when they saw their teacher turn up like this.

29. I can't get over the fact that these giant, slightly creepy animal costumes were part of a charity parade! The people inside them were walking around Denver to raise money for the March of Dimes and support research into preventing birth defects. I bet they turned quite a few heads that day, especially that enormous furry creature leading the parade.

30. I have to give credit to whoever made Halloween costumes back then, because these are genuinely terrifying. The witch, Mickey Mouse, and that mysterious character in the background look like they could scare the living daylights out of a grown adult. Children were clearly really committed to the spooky side of the holiday back then.

Did you make it through all 30 photos without getting creeped out? I don't know about you, but a few of these are going to stay with me for a while. Which of these photos spooked you the most? Let me know in the comments!
