1. "I delivered a couch to an otherwise completely normal house, and they said, 'Just put it in the memorabilia room.' The Nazi memorabilia room. There were mannequins in full regalia with arms saluting, flags, barbed wire, helmets, and weaponry. We dropped it and got the fuck out of there real quick."
"Ughh we had a neighbor in Florida with a similar room — 'I'm just preserving pieces of history.' That's why we have museums. Collecting/displaying these types of items in a home is impossible to interpret as neutral, much less a positive."
"My grandpa kept a few pieces of his father's KKK memorabilia in a box tucked out of the way in the basement. He hated that his father was involved in the KKK, but was passionate about preserving family history and didn't believe in trying to erase the ugly parts. (He was a history teacher and then a principal.)
When the grandchildren reached a certain age, he would bring out the box and show us the artifacts as part of a serious discussion about racism and thinking for ourselves. He was proud that he didn't follow in his father's footsteps and lived to vote for the first Black president.
That was a legitimate reason to own such things. Displaying stuff like that in a private home for any reason would just be creepy."
2. "In college, my roommate asked if I wanted to go to a party. I said sure, not knowing it was 90 minutes away. She drove, and when we got there, it was a family all living in one house. I was like, 'Is this the party?' She said, 'It must not have started yet.' We went inside, and something caught my eye on the wall. It was a picture frame with dozens of roaches going in and out of it. I looked down, and there were roaches everywhere. I texted my friend, 'Girl, hell no, I want to leave.' She said, 'Please, can we stay a few hours?' I had no choice because she drove and I was far away, so I said okay. Two hours later, she asked me in front of them if we could stay the night. I got pissed and said, 'Fuck no, I want to leave now, and you can come back.' I turned fast and hit a picture frame with my shoulder, and hundreds of roaches came out running. I will never forget it, and fuck you, Crystal LOL."
3. "I'm an in-home dog sitter on the side. I went to meet a family and their dogs before staying there for a week. It was a very nice, rich neighborhood. Huge beautiful house. I showed up and was just hit with an overwhelming smell of feces. They had two dogs, and they 'just couldn't potty train them, no matter how hard they tried.' The hardwood floors were slightly squishy from the pee. The entire floor, rugs, and couches were slightly yellow. They brought me into the living room, and the rug CRUNCHED. I tried to gently explain that I have worked with hundreds of dog owners, and it's not normal to allow your animals to freely pee and poop in your house. They seemed to take it alright at the time, but were apprehensive. After I left, the husband texted me and called me 'mentally deranged.' For not wanting to sleep in a house for a week where the pee was fucking structural? I think about them often."
"That’s WILD!!! You are absolutely correct. I pet sit in a very affluent area and it’s wild what can be going on in beautiful homes with expensive cars in the driveway. I’ve seen some SHIT doing this job lol. But also, how can people have all the money in the world and still neglect their animals? :("
